RIO HONDO – Voters here will take to the polls Saturday to decide seven seats up for grabs on the Rio Hondo ISD School Board and Rio Hondo City Commission.
From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 11, voters can cast their ballots in both the city and school district elections at the Rio Hondo Independent School District Administration Building, located at 215 W. Colorado St., on Saturday.
Total number of early ballots cast was 373 for city candidates and 1,183 for school board hopefuls.
On the ballot for reelection is Mayor Alonzo Garza Sr., challenging him is Place 1 Commissioner Gustavo “Gus” Olivares. Garza’ candidacy was initially in question when it was reported that the mayor had missed the deadline to withdraw from the race yet expressed an unwillingness to seek reelection. It was later reported, however, that the mayor has been actively campaigning, at least according to citizens of Rio Hondo who point to Garza’ political signs in town as an indication of as much.
As previously reported, Rio Hondo city officials have not offered any additional information on the matter and repeated attempts to reach Garza for comment have been unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Pl. 2 City Commissioner Rick Tello seeks reelection but will have to fend off former commissioner Anita Lozano. Pl. 4 incumbent Miguel “Mike” Uresti is also facing a former commissioner in challenger Kitter Huerta.
The Rio Hondo ISD election is just as active as Pl. 1 board member Noe Alaniz Jr. goes up against challenger Mike St. John, Pl. 2 incumbent Susan G. Lopez faces Jessica Gonzales, Pl. 3 board member Noemi Garza seeks reelection against Arnold Martinez Jr., and Pl. 4 incumbent Rene Alfaro will be challenged by Claudia Villalobos.
