‘Hounds victorious over Mustangs, 9-1

Special to the NEWS

Things have been up and down for the San Benito Greyhounds as of late.

And Thursday night was one of the “up” moments.

The ’Hounds produced 10 hits and got marvelous pitching in a 9-1 romp over McAllen Memorial at Greyhound Park.

With the win, San Benito improved to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in District 31-5A. After a recent skid, the ’Hounds are tied for fifth place with PSJA Memorial, who they’ll face next Thursday. But they’re just a game out of a three-way tie for second place with nearly a full round of district play to go.

“We told the kids that when they score every inning, get 10 hits and don’t make any errors, it’s a good game,” San Benito coach Ram Partida said. “I’m real proud of the kids. We’ve been struggling and they showed a lot of heart and character. We’re hoping this gets things turned around.”

Against the Mustangs, the ’Hounds saw the return of pitcher Tommy Padilla who started the game. In a 1-1 contest, freshman Mando Medrano came on in the second inning and pitched 5 ½ innings of superb ball, fanning five and allowing two hits to get the win.

Sophomore Chris Padilla was solid at the plate, going 2-for-3 including a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Ruben Reyes went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored while Victor Gaitan was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run against the Mustangs.

After scoring a run in the home half of the first inning, San Benito scored two in the second, three in the third and one run in each of the next three innings as the total swelled to nine.

Meanwhile, some roster changes and a couple of stinging losses have tested the ’Hounds as of late. The club carries three freshmen in Medrano, J.R. Gaitan and Joseph Partida and also three sophomores in Chris Padilla, Reyes and Victor Gaitan. But Partida says his club is coming around and hopes to make a second-half surge to the playoffs.

“This district is tough,” Partida said. “We know we’re gonna need a few more wins to get to the playoffs and that starts with PSJA Memorial next Thursday.”
