The Rio Hondo Independent School District is looking for a new superintendent.

RHISD Superintendent Anneliese McMinn, who has served the district in said capacity for nine years, will be retiring at the end of the school year.

“We feel that it is a tremendous loss to the district,” said RHISD Board President Noemi Garza. “She has been a strong leader, a woman of integrity and very strong when it comes to finance. She was able to keep a healthy fund balance when other districts are struggling with state cuts.”

Garza said that the board will now look for a superintendent with financial and academic experience.

“They will need to be fiscally responsible with the tax dollars,” Garza said. “We have to protect the district’s staff and programs. We also need to continue a strong curriculum, which is another one of McMinn’s strengths.”

The district has hired George McShan, Harlingen CISD Board Secretary, to help narrow the list of potential candidates for approval by the RHISD School Board, which will make its decision on McMinn’s replacement.

Meanwhile, McMinn, who has committed 40 years to education, said that she is ready to retire and enjoy her family.

“I’m going to miss the staff, the board and the community,” said McMinn. “Rio Hondo has been a wonderful place to work, but I’m ready to enjoy my time off and travel, visit my grandkids and have a good time.”
