Special to the NEWS

Three students from Rio Hondo High School competed for a spot in the ATSSB All-State Band and came out on top, beating hundreds of high school students who auditioned within their respected instruments. Among these students were Pedro Tovar, Jr. on tuba, and Jose Vasquez on trumpet. Joshua Ysaguirre, who plays the baritone saxophone, was ranked first in the All-State Jazz Band.

The All-State Band is comprised of the best musicians in the State of Texas, and to advance to the All-State Band is an honor and an experience that the Rio Hondo students are sure to remember.

For three days these students rehearsed as an ensemble to perform in concert at the Texas Music Educators Association Annual Convention in San Antonio. The All-State Band performed in concert on February 16 under the direction of Dr. Peter Boonshaft, a nationally renowned conductor and musician.

The All-State Jazz Band was under the direction of Dr. Ron McCurdy from the University of Southern California.
