A Rio Hondo man and US Homeland Security agent assigned to the Immigration Customs Enforcement agency was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly driving while intoxicated in San Benito.

According to a police report, at approximately 3:24 a.m. a San Benito police officer observed a grey 2008 Chevrolet pick-up driving erratically and heading northbound on Oscar Williams Road. The officer initiated a traffic stop near the 100 block of China Street and observed that a man and woman were the occupants of the pick-up.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 29-year-old Ramon Sandoval Jr., who also identified himself as an ICE agent. The arresting officer noticed alleged signs of impairment due to alcohol consumption and attempted to conduct a field sobriety test, which Sandoval reportedly refused.

Sandoval was placed under arrest for DWI and taken to City Jail, where he allegedly refused to provide a breath sample. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Manuel Flores, who set his bond at $5,000.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Adelina A. Pruneda released a statement regarding Sandoval’s arrest.

“All accusations of personnel misconduct are investigated thoroughly by ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR),” the statement read. “If/when these charges are substantiated, ICE will take immediate and appropriate action. For privacy reasons, ICE cannot comment on internal personnel issues. ICE holds all our employees to adhere to the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.”
