NMCACThe Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center will be hosting a Valentine’s Day event which will feature an acoustic performance by Alan Cavazos y Don Ramiro Cavazos entitled, Polkas, Redovas y Huapangos, on Thursday, February 14, at 7 p.m.

Don Ramiro Cavazos, also known as the “Dean of Border Music,” will be accompanying his 17-year-old grandson Alan Cavazos as they perform songs from their album titled Polkas, Redovas, Y Huapangos, as well as music from conjunto pioneers such as Narciso Martinez, Juan Lopez, Antonio Tanguma, and Ramiro Cavazos among others.

“It’s just an acoustic presentation,” said NMCAC co-founder Rogelio Nuñez. “(Ramiro) Cavazos will be 86 on Saturday; he’s one of the pioneering musicians who is still with us. He is very well known throughout the US and Mexico, one of the true musicians with audiences on both sides of the border.”

Ramiro Cavazos was born in Nuevo Leon on February 16, 1927, and made his way to Donna in the 1940s where he met Mario Martinez for Los Donneños, a musical partnership that would take him throughout the US and Latin America.

Now Ramiro’s grandson, Alan, appears to be following in his footsteps.

“(Alan) is very accomplished,” Nuñez said. He’s learned well from grandfather and other folks. It is a wonderful treat to have Ramiro and Alan perform, and continue to support conjunto music which he represents.”

The event will be held at the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center, located at 225 E. Stenger St.

  1. I wonder if this will be an outdoor event? And what the admission fee will be?
