PROGRESO – Following a disappointing loss to rival Port Isabel, the Rio Hondo Bobcats are hoping to finish off their season with a win against the struggling Progreso Red Ants on Friday.
Despite Progreso being winless in District 32-3A and the Bobcats only managing to win one game in district place, this contest stands as a possible silver lining to the Bobcats season.
Led this year by seniors Juan Puga and Rolando Vega on offense, the ’Cats, who had high hopes for this season may be out of playoff contention but would like nothing more than to end the year with a strong statement against the Red Ants.
Despite their overall winning record, Rio Hondo has not fared well in district play and their loss to Port Isabel may have ended any hope the Bobcats had of squeaking their way into the postseason. Puga, who has been the signal caller for Rio Hondo this season, racked up over 700 yards rushing and close to 1,000 yards through the air while accounting for over 20 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury. Puga has since missed the last three football games in which his absence was felt.
Vega, along with Hernan Guerrero joined Puga to combine for over 1,800 yards on the ground and will also be ending their career this Friday. Senior linebacker Santos Carrizales, also ending his Bobcat career will be heading the Rio Hondo defense against a Progreso offense that hasn’t exactly been a juggernaut this year.
Kick-off is set in Progreso for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
