’Hounds to play for pride against Panthers

HoundsComing into this season, the San Benito Greyhounds had visions of an undefeated record, a district crown, and playoff victories, now as their final game of the season looms, the ’Hounds will be hoping for at least an above .500 season.

San Benito started the season with impressive victories over Los Fresnos and Harlingen, two playoff teams in contention for the 32-5A title, leading many Greyhound fans to believe an undefeated season was more than attainable.

The competition in District 31-5A proved difficult, however, for the Greyhounds as they dropped two of their first three district contests. Now with the playoffs out of reach, the ’Hounds will be playing for nothing more than pride when the second place Weslaco Panthers come rolling into town. Oh yeah, it’s also homecoming for San Benito.

“We’re not just gonna roll over and let them win this game because we’re out of the playoffs,” said senior lineman Adrian Zuniga. “We plan on playing them as if our season was on the line, we plan on giving them the toughest game they’ve had all year.”

Weslaco comes into Friday just one game behind district leader Weslaco East, and while the Panthers already have a playoff spot locked up, a win against the Greyhounds would give them a shot at a possible co-district championship. “We know they want to go into the playoffs with a win and all that, but we want this season to end on a high note for us,” added Zuniga.

If San Benito can pull off the upset, they’ll finish the regular season with a 6-4 record and a 4-4 record in district play.

For all the struggles the Greyhounds have faced this year, they are coming off their largest win of the season and have only one blemish on their home record so far this year, a mark that will be put to the test the Friday at Bobby Morrow Stadium as the Greyhounds will close out the 2012 season against the Panthers.

Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday.

  1. Both teams know what they are up against. Most teams who play their cards wright play tempoed getting the feel of how the other team is playing and checking out their weaknesses. Once they have it down the real game begins. Weslaco is one of the best coached teams in the RGV. Veteran coach Tony Villareal will the Panthers ready to play.

Thanks Pete Banda for all the great headlines on the Greyhounds. It’s hard to believe the Greyhounds beat Los Fresnos and Harlingen and did not make the playoffs. Maybe next year.

    Go Hounds!
Even though the playoffs are out of reach it would still be great for the Hounds to get a win over those panthers. San Benito is a tough team and the Weslaco team should not be fooled by there record.
    Good Luck Hounds!!

What a dissappointing season for the Hounds. It all comes down to coaching. Great defense and not so good offense.

I think Hounds are going to lay down and be pounded by the Panthers. Nothing to play for. Panthers have everything to play for. Panthers have our number.
