Bringing the love of basketball to San Benito is Eddie Abrego’s mission at San Benito High School (SBHS).

At the age of 38, Abrego has been coaching varsity basketball at SBHS for 15 years. “I always tell my friends and fellow coaches that I ‘bleed gold and purple.’”

Along with coaching, Abrego also has been teaching World History at SBHS for 16 years.

He can’t quite say he was born in San Benito because, “I’m a twin, and they don’t give birth to twins in San Benito,” Abrego said. “I was born in Harlingen, but I lived in San Benito my whole life.”

Attending college at the University of Houston, Abrego realized how much he missed the peace and quiet of San Benito. He transferred to The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. After college, he came back to his hometown to teach, coach and start his family.
