There isn’t an empty space on the walls of 82-year-old Charlie and 85-year-old Bertha Wilson’s home due to the abundant amount of plaques, photographs, and awards they have collected over the years for outstanding service and commitment to the community of San Benito.
The Wilsons flaunted their plaques with great pride Thursday. Each one tells a story from different chapters in their lives as they gave this writer a quick tour of their beautiful two-story house. But Charlie stopped in front of one particular photograph – a picture of Bertha circa 1948 – and smiled wider than any other time that afternoon.
“This is what I fell for,” he exclaimed as he displayed the photo of the then 22-year-old brunette.
In response, Bertha motioned toward a photograph of a 19-year-old Charlie, clad in his uniform. “That’s what I fell for,” she said with a smile. “Him and that uniform.”
