San Benito Chess Team Wins National Title

HARLINGEN – The chess team of the San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy (VMA) Afterschool Program arrived to Valley International Airport in style on Monday as students brought back a national title won in Florida over the weekend.

The team, consisting of VMA students Brandon Flores, Jose Luis Urrutia Jr., Jason Daniel Sauceda, Erick P. Guevara, Steven Vasquez , Tonatiuh Gonzalez, and Jesus Coronado Lino; competed Friday-Sunday, Dec. 10-12 in the ninth grade division of the National Grades Championships held inside the Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The competition included teams from the New York City area as well as California and Chicago, Illinois.
