Standing outside Wednesday night in the cold at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito I am convinced that what I saw is why I love covering sports at the younger levels. Getting the chance to cover the season championships for the Boys & Girls Club of San Benito’s Tackle Football Finals was a joy.
So if ever there was a preseason preview that scooped the competition then I challenge you fans to cut this one out and place it somewhere that in five to six years you can bring it back out and take a read. For some of the names that appeared in my story about those games and the players that stood on that field will no doubt be the ones suiting up under the Friday night lights when their high school life plays out.
The thing that I love about covering the youth is that there is never a lack of passion for just getting to play. This was obvious to me from the moment I got to the stadium and saw some of the players suiting up in the parking lot. The story was in their eyes as they gazed towards the stadium with the look that one knew they couldn’t wait to get in there.
