BROWNSVILLE – It’s taken a month, but a county judge has finally been named.

Four weeks after the Nov. 2 general election, the Cameron County Commissioners Court approved Tuesday morning the canvassing of the vote in the county judge’s race, this after a number of amended reports were filed by county elections administrator Roger Ortiz following at least two reported errors, one “clerical” and the other “mathematical.”

When the smoke cleared, Republican incumbent Carlos Cascos was named the victor. Cascos’ win came after a couple of lead changes stemming from said errors. His challenger, Democrat John Wood – a current county commissioner – abstained from voting on the approval. The judge and Commissioners David A. Garza and Edna Tamayo and David A. Garza voted in favor of the canvassing; the sole opposing vote came from Commissioner Sofia C. Benavides.
