Near triple the size of the current location, construction of the new H-E-B in San Benito is moving along and expected to be complete in 2010, store officials said.

According to San Benito H-E-B Store Director Arturo Tovias, an announcement may soon be made regarding the store's future.

“We're getting close. We had a meeting with public affairs and while no release date has been set for the grand opening, construction is going pretty smooth and we're expecting to get the store ready by this year,” Tovias said. “We're close to announcing a date for the grand opening.”

H-E-B Public Affairs Specialist Virginia Perez said in April that the store was scheduled to open on Oct. 15, 2010. It has yet to be determined as of presstime if this is still the slated date.

Meanwhile, Tovias said he has been pleased with the pace in which construction has moved and was happy to announce that the new store will encompass 60,000 sq. ft.; the current facility is at 28,000 sq. ft.

It was announced in January that a new H-E-B, to be located adjacent from the current store on the 1100 block of Southwest Highway 77, was opening in San Benito. The former Resaca Gardens property, where the new store is being built, is a 15-acre stretch of land that was purchased in 2005 by the supermarket giant for $1.7 million, this to expand its current location. Store officials have yet to provide the cost of construction or exact numbers regarding job creation.
